Futuristic Soviet tractor of 1988, which could change the freight market

It will be about the “Perestroika” MAZ-2000 familiar to many, this tractor was presented at the Paris Motor Show in 1988, and this is the case when Soviet equipment really produced a splash, something new and quite technological.

Think about it, 30 new inventions were patented. Licenses for the designed design were immediately acquired by two countries of the countries — the USA and Japan from the point of view of technology.

The essence of MAZ-2000 is the modular design, one module is a cabin, another module is a cart where the engine stands, a checkpoint. An ordinary trolley in the trailer was supposed to be replaced with a traction module, which allows you to increase the carrying capacity, without increasing the power and size of the engine itself.

The chief engineer of the project Mikhail Vysotsky gave the following example — let’s say you need to go to the mountainous area, an additional traction module is placed on the basis in the trailer and the tractor calmly goes to the route.

A similar technique was also considered for transcontinental transportation-a road train of 2-3 or more trailers could transport a lot of cargo, for example, from Kaliningrad to Vladivostok. For our country, this is not so critical, there is a developed network, but in the United States, a roadway is quite common, perhaps it was an attempt to aim at the rich US market.

Technical filling:

We took care of the comfort of the driver and his shifter. The cab has air conditioning, electric stove, radio, TV, as well as a rear view camera. The replacement chair is rotary. For Soviet trucks, it was unusual to have such a high ceiling and an even floor.

Separately, it is worth paying attention to the panoramic glass, the traction module turns separately from the cab, not the most convenient moment. I think to many who traveled on a “loaf” is familiar with an incomprehensible feeling that the car seems to turn, but you continue to go forward.

Accordingly, so that the driver has at least some kind of glass, make it large and rounded at the edges (it is interesting how much it would be worth changing such pleasure after chips).

What happened to the project? Naturally, he did not go to the series, although he managed to endure even some restyling (as it is now fashionable to say). He did not go into a series because of a difficult situation in the country, as well as the unwillingness to change the usual old one for something new.

The idea could be developed further, but certain know-how seemed to the “fathers” too unusual. Now one of the experienced MAZ-2000 is a monument in front of the plant, recalling real engineers of the oldest years.
