Today I will tell you about my own electric bike, which has served me faithfully for the fourth year. More precisely, the bike itself was purchased 15 years ago, and electrified in the winter of 2016-2017.

In this regard, the bike was not only not prepared properly, but, in principle, was not suitable for trips outside the asphalt. Nevertheless, I got carried away and rode all four tracks of the Crimean MTB Marathon out of classification, starting after all registered participants.

Since we have touched on the marathon, I would like to say that, given the terrain, with steep descents and ascents, its passage was rather difficult, but the bike carries itself to very steep hills where you go on foot, and this, of course, gives a huge advantage. On descents, I learned to hang down by the saddle, excluding the possibility of flying over the handlebars.

But let’s move on to the bike itself, and then I will describe the malfunctions that I have encountered over almost 4 years of operation, including engine malfunction, its causes and the cost of repairs.

To remove the battery from the platform, open the lock with the key and pull it forward and up. Then I take the battery home to charge. I have two chargers, since my wife uses the second one — she also has an electric bike, and there will be a separate article about it on the channel a little later.

The battery case is made of polycarbonate, and it is not afraid to drop it, and there is a convenient handle for carrying.

If I need to charge the battery quickly, I use a 5 amp charger, it takes just over 2 hours to fully charge. If I leave it charging overnight, then I use a 2 ampere charger — it does not have a fan and works silently, charging the battery in 5.5 hours.

A 48 volt controller rated for 18 amps maximum is mounted behind the battery and controls the motor so quietly that it is almost inaudible.

At its end is a 16 W buck voltage converter, which converts the battery voltage into a stable 5 volts, which I use to power the headlight, taillight and recharge my phone.

Since everything is powered by the main battery, this eliminates the need to monitor the status of individual batteries in the flashlights, which is very convenient.

Now Electron Bikes have abandoned Chinese-made controllers and are installing their new controllers on bicycles, which are a little larger than a matchbox and are assembled in Nizhny Novgorod, there will be a separate article about them a little later. The compact control panel with a liquid crystal display displays all standard parameters (speed, time, distance), allows you to set the degree of assistance (more details will be given below, in the section about the PAS sensor) and has a built-in backlight for operation in the dark.

The panel is located on the left side of the steering wheel, and I calmly reach for its buttons with my thumb to switch modes and level of assistance.

The Half-twist throttle is located on the right, and I really like this performance, I’m used to it.

Turning the handle, I continue to hold the grip with the right side of my hand, and when I need to release the gas, I simply loosen my hand and the handle returns to its original position.

Having tried somehow Full-twist, in which the entire handle rotates, I was surprised — how can you handle it? To slow down the throttle, you need to turn it forward, and in unusual situations this can be problematic. But this is probably a matter of habit, because motorcycles have the same type of handle, and motorcyclists are completely satisfied with this.

Many people underestimate this sensor by refusing to install it and using only the throttle stick. PAS — Pedal Assist System, or pedal assistant. In fact, the sensor itself is a Hall sensor and a ring with magnets installed in the carriage assembly. As you pedal, the magnets sweep past the sensor and it sends the appropriate signals to the controller.

With a PAS sensor, you can independently control the battery consumption and the degree of engine assistance. The latter is determined on a scale from 1 to 5, this value is set on the control panel and can be changed while driving. The slide — increased, flat or descent — decreased, and if there is a small but steep slide ahead, turned the throttle and jumped on it at full power.

The electrical wiring on the bike is sealed — neither rain, nor deep puddles, nor Körcher are afraid of it. But about Körcher, you need to use it wisely and not direct powerful pressure into the connectors and gaskets. Moreover, this applies to both electrical and mechanical parts.

Just like a regular bike, my electric most frequent malfunction in 4 years was a puncture or breakdown of the camera. Twice I caught a «snake bite» when, with insufficient pressure in the chamber, I pierced it with the rim in two places at once.

The first time it was a curb, the second happened quite recently, at a marathon, where the pressure in the chambers was deliberately lowered for better grip. In both cases, temporary patches made it possible to reach the final point of the route.

The next malfunction is more serious —

Cutting gears happened by my mistake. I was in a hurry to get to the right place in the city, and I was driving at full throttle, almost without pedaling. But at that moment I did not know that one of the rear rim brake pads was pressed against the rim and slowed it down.

As a result, the engine worked under increased load, and, accordingly, the rotor had time to overheat. And all would be fine, but when I got to the place, I decided to park the bike, sharply rolling it in the opposite direction. At this moment, the warmed-up gears were cut off by the hot rotor.

Of course, the cost of electricity must be added here, but it is incomparably less than the cost of gasoline, so it can be ignored altogether. It turns out that the cost of the electrical kit has paid for itself long ago, given my constant trips, which is good news.
