It was developed by German mechanical engineer Dennis Freiburg when he was studying for his doctorate, and the bike was part of his project. The Merida Scultura bike was chosen as a donor, the carbon frame of which weighs only 1 kg.

Dennis examined each of its components to see if the metal elements could be replaced with lighter ones made from carbon fiber or produced using 3D-printing technology.

In particular, he installed carbon rims, cranks and a saddle, and 3D printed the pedals. Since the engineer initially set himself the goal of getting into the Guinness Book of Records, he had to go through several configuration options in order to achieve the minimum possible weight, but most importantly, the goal was achieved.

The heaviest electrical components are usually the electric motor and the battery. There are fairly light wheel motors and center motors, but Dennis chose an even lighter solution — he used a small motor used to rotate the main rotor of a radio-controlled helicopter.

In the vastness of the Russian-speaking Internet, there are similar solutions (a friction drive based on a model electric motor), but they certainly cost their authors much cheaper.
