Electric bike weighing less than 7 kg, hit the Guinness Book of Records

Hello friends!

As you know, e-bicycles weigh more than regular bicycles due to the electrical equipment installed on them. Although, there are models that violate this rule, such as,

But today I want to talk about an even lighter e-bike, or rather, about a prototype e-bike called

It was developed by German mechanical engineer Dennis Freiburg when he was studying for his doctorate, and the bike was part of his project. The Merida Scultura bike was chosen as a donor, the carbon frame of which weighs only 1 kg.

Dennis examined each of its components to see if the metal elements could be replaced with lighter ones made from carbon fiber or produced using 3D-printing technology.

In particular, he installed carbon rims, cranks and a saddle, and 3D printed the pedals. Since the engineer initially set himself the goal of getting into the Guinness Book of Records, he had to go through several configuration options in order to achieve the minimum possible weight, but most importantly, the goal was achieved.

The heaviest electrical components are usually the electric motor and the battery. There are fairly light wheel motors and center motors, but Dennis chose an even lighter solution — he used a small motor used to rotate the main rotor of a radio-controlled helicopter.

Based on this engine,

For use in the European Union, the Freicycle engine power was programmatically limited to 250 W, and the maximum speed was 25 km / h. But when the restrictions are lifted, the engine is capable of delivering

To establish the Guinness record for electric bicycles, certain restrictions are provided, among which is the absolute capacity of the battery, which must be at least

The bottle cap is unusual — turning it turns on the electrical equipment and selects the degree of assistance when pedaling. Both the cap and the bottle holder, which is attached to the seat tube, are 3D printed.

The weight of all electrical equipment does not exceed 2 kg, and the range of the bike is

The total cost of the project is about 20,000 euros, but during its implementation the author did not experience financial problems, thanks to the sponsorship of the Technical University of Dortmund, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Velotech and Merida Bikes.

In the vastness of the Russian-speaking Internet, there are similar solutions (a friction drive based on a model electric motor), but they certainly cost their authors much cheaper.

Maybe someone is building a similar ultralight electric bike right now to set a new Guinness World Record? Write in the comments what you think about this prototype.

If you like it, put a «thumbs up»
