The idea of cycling on water undoubtedly occupied the minds of many inventors, but apparently flaws and imperfections in the design prevented the entry to the market.
And now, at CES 2020, the New Zealand company Manta5 has presented an electric hydrofoil called the Hydrofoiler XE-1, which has been in development for almost 10 years.
The Hydrofoiler XE-1 combines electronically assisted pedaling similar to classic e-bikes. There are three modes of assistance: in the first, movement is provided mainly by the pedals, in the third — due to the electric motor.
The maximum travel speed is 20 km / h, the average speed is usually 10-12 km / h.
The manufacturer claims that the product’s ability to launch from under water is «the first of its kind among hydrofoils.»
This means that if you want to stop somewhere along the way, or lose your balance and fall, you can independently rise to the surface and continue moving.
The Hydrofoiler XE-1 weighs about 20 kg, but will not sink.
The permissible load is 100 kg, so not everyone can handle it — but for some it may be an additional incentive to lose weight.
To make the XE-1 easier to transport, it is partially disassembled — the hydrofoils are removed.
By the way, the front hydrofoil is 1.2m, the rear is 2m, both made of carbon fiber. For operation on reservoirs, it is necessary that the depth is 1 meter, if you plan to stop — 2 meters. Otherwise, the hydrofoils and propeller can be damaged during start and movement.
The electrical part is completely sealed and is not afraid of immersion in water — in accordance with the IP68 protection class.
A full battery charge will last approximately an hour of operation of the 400 W engine. It takes about 5 hours to fully charge the battery.
The first batch of Hydrofoiler XE-1 is being shipped to New Zealand customers only, with plans to ship worldwide from April 2020.
I guess you enjoyed the hydrofoil bike as much as I did. The only pity is that its price is as much as $ 7,490, that is, almost half a million rubles, and I believe that only a few Russian citizens will be able to afford it.
But maybe in the near future some of the Russian startups will develop something similar at a more attractive price? The main thing is that it doesn’t take them the same 10 years. We will keep an eye on new products. Subscribe!
